Battle of the Books

In 2013, the library launched a regional program called “Battle of the Books” for local school districts.  This program specifically encouraged 4th – 12th grade students to read titles from the 2013-2014 Missouri Association of School Librarian’s (MASL) book nominations.  We have since continued these events every year and they have been a huge success.

Levels are as follows:

Students in 4th - 6th grade - Mark Twain level - Click here for the list and reviews
Students in 6th - 8th grade - Truman level - Click here for the list and reviews
Students in 9th - 12th grade - Gateway level - Click here for the list and reviews

Before the event, each team will read all of the titles from the Missouri Association of School Librarian's list of nominated books at their grade level. The more students on a team, the better, however, there is a limit of ten students allowed to a team. Each team member is not limited to but should be expected to read one or two books from the list. Schools may enter more than one team. Trivia contests will consist of ten rounds with twelve to fifteen questions each (one question per book per round). Tie-breaker = extra round(s). One point will be awarded for each correct answer. There will be no cost to enter these contests.

Trivia events will be held in early March to avoid bad weather and conflicts with sports events. Dates/times:

March 5, 2019 – Gateway (9th – 12th) at Belle High School at 4:30 pm

March 7, 2019 – Mark Twain (4th – 6th) at Vienna at 4:00 pm

March 12, 2019 – Truman (6th – 8th) at Tuscumbia at 4:00 pm

Good luck and have fun reading!
